  • May 2009. The IMF, along with the EU and other lenders, agrees a loan package for Romania worth US$26.4 billion to be paid in quarterly instalments,
  • December 2008. After legislative elections a new cabinet is formed formed from the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
  • November 2008. Legislative elections bring the centre-right PDL the most seats in both chambers of the bicameral legislature.
  • August 2008. Danel Morar, the head of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate is dismissed by the justice minister. Morar had been praised by the EU for his efforts in investigating former ministers and senior officials.
  • July 2008. The European Commission criticises Romania for making insufficient efforts to tackle corruption.
  • January 2008. The PDL is formed when the Democratic Party (PD) merges with the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD).
  • November 2007. European Parliament elections are won by the main opposition parties: the Democratic Party (PD) and the PSD.
  • October 2007. The agriculture minister of the National Liberal Party (PNL) government steps down after an investigation is opened against him by the anti-corruption department.
  • May 2007. In a national referendum to impeach President Traian Basescu over November unconstitutional conduct 75 per cent of voters support his remaining in office.
  • April 2007. Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu dissolves the Truth and Justice alliance of his National Liberal Party and the Democratic Party and forms a new cabinet with members of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR).
  • January 2007. Romania officially joins the EU
  • October 2006. The government nominates Varujan Vosganian to become Romanias EU commissioner when the country joins the bloc in 2007.
  • May 2006. The EU delays a final decision on Romanias ascension to the EU as several reforms are still needed and corruption remains a problem.
  • February 2006. Former Prime Minister (2000-04) Adrian Nastase is indicted by the anti-corruption directorate for bribery.
  • October 2005. The EU enlargement commissioner warns Romania that their entry into the EU could be delayed unless judicial reform and efforts to tackle corruption are accelerated.
  • May 2005. Romanias parliament approves the EU accession treaty and the EU warns Romania to curb state subsidies or face a one-year delay in its accession.
  • April 2005. The European Parliament approves Romanias entry into the EU by a 497-93 majority.
  • December 2004. Basescu of the Truth and Justice alliance wins the presidential election.
  • April 2004. Romania formally joins NATO, alongside six other Balkan and Baltic states.
  • February 2001. A large-scale privatisation programme is announced and a law allowing property confiscated by communist-era governments to be reclaimed is enacted.
  • December 2000. Former communist Ion Iliescu is elected as president. He previously served as president from Ceausescus overthrow in 1989 to 1996.
  • December 1996. A centre-right government is sworn in, ending former communists spell in power dating back to the overthrow of Ceausescu in 1989.
  • December 1989. The communist regime of Ceausescu is overthrown in a popular uprising against which the army refuses to intervene. Ceausescu and his wife Elena are tried by a military tribunal and executed.
  • September 1944. Romania, under imminent threat of invasion by the Soviet Union, revokes its alliance with Nazi Germany and agrees to fight with the Allies.
  • June 1941. Romania enters the Second World War aligned with Germany.
