A military coup d'état was carried out in Bangkok on Nov. 29three days before the return from Europe of King Rama IXby a group of high-ranking Army, Navy, and Air Force officers, who overthrew the Government, dissolved Parliament, and appointed a Provisional Executive Council consisting of General Phin Chunhawan, C.-in-C. of the Army, two other generals, three admirals, and three air-marshals, including the C.-in-C. of the Air Force (Air Chief Marshal Fuen R. Ridhagani). A proclamation issued by the leaders of the coup announced that they sought the people's confidence and co-operation; emphasized their loyalty to the King; and gave as the reason for their action the Government's failure to suppress corruption and to solve the problem of Communism, which, they alleged, had widely penetrated the Cabinet and Parliament.
