Apr 1992 - Appointment of Suchinda as Prime Minister
Gen. Suchinda Kraprayoon, hitherto Army C.-in-C, Supreme Commander of the armed forces and the effective leader of the military junta which had ruled the country since February 1991, was appointed as Prime Minister on April 7.
Following the general election of March 22 (which aimed to return the country to civilian rule) a loose coalition of five pro-military parties headed by the air force-backed Samakkhi Tham had attempted to form a government [see p. 38816]. However, this coalition's proposed premier, the Samakkhi Tham leader Narong Wongwan, had then lost credibility after the publication of US State Department information about his suspected involvement in drug trafficking.
On March 26 the US State Department confirmed that it had in July 1991 denied a visa to Narong because of suspicions over his role in heroin trading. Initially Narong continued to receive the support of the five coalition members, but by April 3 ...
