In legislative elections held on Jan. 6 the Thai Rak Thai party ( TRTThais Love Thais) narrowly failed to secure an unprecedented absolute majority in the House of Representatives (the lower house of the bicameral legislature), winning 248 out of 500 seats. Early results had indicated that the TRT might win as many as 257 seats. No party, however, had previously won more than a third of the seats, and TRT's ability to form a new government was unquestioned even before on Jan. 24 the New Aspiration Party (NAP) announced itself as a coalition partner [for details of TRT see p. 43674]. Elections were re-run in 62 constituencies on Jan. 29 after the independent Election Commission found evidence of malpractice in the original ballots. At least eight initially victorious candidates were disqualified from standing again.
