A series of anti-corruption investigations launched recently by the government led to the arrest in January of several senior Energy Ministry officials and prominent businessmen, including Yahya Murat Demirel, nephew of former President Suleyman Demirel (19932000). The investigations, dubbed “White Energy”, also appeared to cause a rift between the coalition government and Turkey's powerful army.
The government reacted with anger when the Hürriyet newspaper quoted in early January an unnamed general as saying that he, and not Energy and Natural Resources Minister Cumhur Ersumer, had ordered the bribery investigation. The inquiry centred on a 1997 tender for power transmission, but other deals were also reported to be under scrutiny. In a strongly worded criticism, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit demanded to know who had made the statement to Hürriyet, which, he claimed, implied mistrust in the government.
