Violent daily clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian police and civilians dominated events during May, overshadowing tentative diplomatic efforts launched by Egypt and Jordan in late April to broker a lasting ceasefire [for April developments see p. 44129]. The violence appeared to enter a new phase in the middle of the month when Israel responded to a suicide bomb attack on its civilians with the use of F-16 fighter-bombers to attack Palestinian targets.
Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip on May 2 designedaccording to Israeli military sourcesto protect its soldiers stationed along the Israeli-Egyptian border. One Palestinian died as Israeli tanks and bulldozers carried out what Israel described as a self-defensive, “pin-point” manoeuvre in one of Gaza's many refugee camps.
