The Palestinian Cabinet said on June 3 that it would ignore a court order to release a leading militant, one of six Palestinians being held in the West Bank town of Jericho under UK and US supervision as part of the internationally brokered deal which ended Israel's siege of Palestinian President Yassir Arafat's compound in Ramallah in early May [see pp. 4481415]. The Palestinian High Court of Justice sitting in Gaza had ordered the release of Ahmed Saadat, secretary general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the group which had carried out the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi in October 2001 [see pp. 4442426]. The court had ruled that there was insufficient evidence to link Saadat to Ze'evi's assassination.
