Feb 2005 - THAILAND
In legislative elections on Feb. 6, the ruling Thai Rak Thai (TRTThais Love Thais) party won a landslide victory, winning a large majority with a probable 377 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives (the lower house of the bicameral legislature) and securing an unprecedented second consecutive term for Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. According to a report in the Bangkok Post on Feb. 25, the Election Commission had endorsed all 500 new legislators, although there were some 400 complaints of electoral malpractice against both successful and defeated candidates. Decisions on disqualifying MPs and calling by-elections were postponed until the new House of Representatives had formally elected a Prime Minister in March. In the meantime Thaksin, who delayed undertaking a Cabinet reshuffle, headed a caretaker government [for January 2001 elections see p. 43948].
