Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Feb. 2 accepted an Egyptian invitation to hold their first summit at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Feb. 8. Abbas had been elected as President of the Palestine National Authority (PNA) in January [see pp. 46438-39], replacing Yasser Arafat who had died in November 2004 [see pp. 46338-40]. Following his victory in the January presidential elections, Sharon had telephoned Abbas to congratulate him, thereby breaking a freeze of almost four years between Israeli leaders and the highest level of the Palestinian leadership. Abbas and Sharon had been expected to meet in Jerusalem, but the venue was switched to Egypt after Sharon had held a meeting with Gen. Omar Suleiman, the Egyptian intelligence chief and the special envoy of Egyptian President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak, who had been a key figure in past efforts to reach ceasefire agreements with hardline Palestinian factions.
