UK Prime Minister Tony Blair convened an international conference in London on March 1 in support of the Palestine National Authority (PNA) [for announcement of London conference in December 2004 see p. 46387]. The conference was attended by a Palestinian delegation led by President Mahmoud Abbas and by representatives of some 30 countries and international organisations, including UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and French Foreign Minister Michael Barnier. Israel was not invited to the meeting, the purpose of which was to rally the international community in support of the PNA's plans to build the institutions of a viable Palestinian state. In early February, Abbas had met with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in Egypt and both leaders had announced a formal end to all violence [see pp. 46492-93].
