May 2006 - Invalidation of general election
The Constitutional Court on May 8 ruled (by eight judges to six) that the April 2 general election of the House of Representatives (the lower house of the bicameral legislature) was invalid, and ordered fresh elections to be held [see pp. 4720001]. The election, which had been boycotted by the main opposition parties, gave a massive victory to the ruling Thai Rak Thai ( TRT Thais love Thais) party, but over 40 per cent of voters abstained or spoiled their ballots and there were allegations of electoral malpractice. Even after a round of by-elections to 40 seats in which the initial results were ruled invalid, the election of the 500-seat House of Representatives remained incomplete. Late in April King Bhumibol Adulyadej, reflecting widespread concern over the legitimacy of the electoral process, called on the country's three most senior courts to resolve the crisis by delivering a judgment on the constitutionality of the election [...
