Oct 2006 - New Prime Minister and Cabinet
Gen. (retd) Surayud Chulanont (formerly rendered as Chulanot) was chosen on Oct. 1 as interim Prime Minister by the Council for National Security (CNS) and was sworn in by King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The CNS--previously called the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM)was the group of generals who ousted the government of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in September [see pp. 47457-58].
Surayud was a respected army commander (1998-2002), credited with turning the army into a more professional, apolitical force, rooting out corruption and placing a new emphasis on human rights. On retiring from the military Surayud had said that he had no interest in entering politics and briefly became a Buddhist monk. It was widely thought that Thaksin dismissed Surayud as army commander because he disapproved of the army's robust response to border incursions in 2002 by Burmese troops and Burmese government-backed militias pursuing Burmese refugees [see ...
