Both Prime Minister Gen. (retd) Surayud Chulanont and chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS) Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratglin said on Jan. 1 that the eight small bombs that exploded in Bangkok (the capital) on Dec. 31, 2006, killing three people and injuring 38, were unlikely to be related to the Islamic insurgency that affected Thailand's three southern Muslim-majority provinces but were more likely caused by “those who have lost political power”, a clear reference to the government led by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, which was ousted in a coup led by Gen. Sonthi in September 2006. Surayud said that intelligence indicated that those responsible wanted to create political instability, “fear and panic”.
