Jun 2007 - Corruption charges against Thaksin
The police on June 19 finally filed corruption charges against the self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, nine months after his government was ousted by a military coup justified partly by allegations of endemic corruption in Thaksin's administration [see pp. 47523-24]. A court indicted Thaksin and his wife Khunying Potjaman in connection with a purchase of government land for a bargain price of 772 million baht (US$1.00=34.5950 baht as at June 22, 2007). An additional charge of concealment of assets was also being prepared. The police summoned Thaksin and Khunying, who were living in the UK, to hear the charges between June 26 and June 29. Thaksin's lawyer said on June 26 that his client would not return to Thailand because he feared for his safety.
An anti-corruption panel on June 11 froze some 52.9 billion baht of Thaksin's assets in 21 bank accounts and on June 25 froze a further 4.7 billion baht. Thaksin ...
