Jan 2006 - Inauguration of President-Government changes
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was sworn in as the new President of Liberia on Jan. 16. Johnson-Sirleaf had defeated George Weah in elections held in October-November 2005 [see pp. 46860; 46917; see also p. 46976]. Johnson Sirleaf, the first elected female head of state in Africa, replaced Gyude Bryant, who had served as head of an interim administration since the departure of President Charles Taylor in August 2003 [see p. 45542]. Joseph Boakai was sworn in as Vice President.
In her inaugural address, President Johnson-Sirleaf, a 67-year-old Harvard-educated World Bank economist, pledged a “fundamental break” with Liberia's violent past [for text of address see pp. 47075-77]. The ceremony was attended by thousands of Liberians, including defeated candidate Weah, and scores of foreign dignitaries, including President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria and President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa.
Following her inauguration, Johnson-Sirleaf began the task of appointing a Cabinet. ...
